Everyone agrees that it’s important for businesses to be on social media to engage with customers and respond to feedback. Despite this, CEOs have been hesitant to get on social. Here are some tips for CEOs on how to engage on social media and why it can benefit your business.
Be a part of the conversation.
Social media is a great tool for businesses to find out what products customers love or hate, and if there are any issues. This should be no different for CEOs. Listening to this conversation lets a CEO know what’s happening with their business and participate in online conversations in a meaningful way. Be sure to engage with customers and other business leaders online by liking, following, retweeting, and replying to messages.
Keep it authentic.
Some CEOs may want to separate their business and personal accounts but that takes more work and makes the business account less authentic. Find a voice for your public account and keep it interesting, and not just about selling. The best CEO accounts offer a window into a world most people don’t see, so share those ‘behind the scenes’ photos and videos.
Establish yourself as a thought leader.
“Thought leader” is not just a buzzword! Offer your audience valuable insights into your industry, leadership tips, commentary on news or trends, and be someone who people want to follow.
How do you actually do this? Simple! Create a social media content calendar, similar to a business’ content calendar. Commit to posting regularly, and if you don’t have time to do it yourself (CEOs often don’t!), have support staff or a social media agency help you create the baseline content.
Be a brand advocate.
Build excitement around your brand and innovate your business with ideas from your followers. Click for some great examples from Elon Musk and Brian Chesky. Utilize your employees and turn them into brand advocates on social as well. The more people who share your content, the more people you reach and can potentially turn into customers.
