Social Media Tips for 2020 (and Beyond!)

Ah, December - the month for holiday festivities, spending time with family and friends, and, contrary to popular belief, the perfect time to review and revamp your business’ social media. Now you may be wondering, “How can I improve my social media strategy before the year ends?” We’ve put together 5 quick and easy tips you can implement today to kick-off 2020 strong:

1. Update your "About" description

The bio, aka “About” section, is one of the most important components of your social media channels. It’s the first place potential clients, followers, fans, employers and other professional and personal connections go to learn about your business and who you are. Want to know how to create a powerful bio? Start with these 3 tips:

#1: Use the Name Field to Share Your Top Targeted Keywords: Did you know that the “name” field in your Instagram bio is completely separate to your username? That means you can customize the name field in the IG bio without changing your username or handle. Spin Society (see below image) used the field to reveal more about their business. By inputting searchable keywords like “cycling” and “studio”, people who are looking for indoor cycling studios in Vancouver can easily find their business.

#2: Use Linkin.bio by Later: Instead of having to constantly switch up the URL and call-to-action in your Instagram bio to coordinate with your most recent post, Linkin.bio creates a clickable landing page for all of your Instagram posts. This will give your followers a fun user experience and help guide your followers back to your website.

#3: Add a Call-to-Action Button: This little tweak will make a big impact: setting up a call-to-action (CTA) on your bio page. Facebook has almost a dozen options to choose from, including “Contact Us”, “Call Now” and “Learn More”. Keep in mind that the CTA you choose should align with your unique business goals.

2. Add a new banner image

Is your current photo from the dark ages? If so, it's time to refresh. Start here:

#1: Stay fresh and use little to no text: We recommend that the visuals on your social media pages are clear, relevant and high quality. A cover photo is a place for big-picture ideas and themes, not text posts, so save those for your wall or feed.

#2: Know your image sizes: One of the biggest marketing headaches in social media is sizing images. Make sure your images look appealing across a variety of devices including desktops, smartphones and tablets.

3. Tweak your LinkedIn profile

Here are 2 simple tweaks to optimize your LinkedIn profile for better business results:

#1: Consider joining a group: Be part of an online community. First, find a group on LinkedIn that appeals to your business and needs by researching in the platform’s search bar. Then, request to join and be an active contributor! Don’t be afraid to ask questions, share articles and reply to threads.

#2: Customize your LinkedIn profile link: If you’re still using the default URL that LinkedIn assigned, it’s time for a change. Boost your LinkedIn rating and ranking with a custom LinkedIn URL. LinkedIn allows you to customize your profile URL so that it's easier to share with others.

#3: Ask an Expert: Need help navigating the platform? Book an Individual or Team LinkedIn Training with us.

4. Revise your website footer

Is your newsletter sign-up active? Are your social media links working properly? You'd be surprised how often these are broken or link to old profiles.

5. Refresh your Google My Business presence

How long has it been since you last looked at your own Google My Business page? To ensure maximum searchability (yes, that’s a word!) and exposure in 2020, follow these simple steps:
